You'll meet your driver guide right at your Puerto Caldera cruise terminal and board an air-conditioned newer model van or minibus. On your drive to Tarcoles River and Carara Adventure Park, you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Your knowledgeable guide will give you some info about the area and be pointing out the various plantations of mango, sugar, coffee, and citrus fruits, plus the colorful fruit stands by the road. You'll pass many rural farming communities on the way.
The drive to the ATV base is about an hour. Upon arrival, you'll have time to use the restrooms and do some exploring. Before heading off on the trails for your 2-hour ride, you'll be given some safety and operating instructions plus a test run on a specially built private track. Once ready, you'll strap on your helmet and it's off into the jungle following your guide. Your ride through the rain forest will be on off-road trails that are sometimes bumpy and dusty. You'll also be doing several river crossings so be prepared to get wet as well and dress accordingly.
The trails also take you past teak tree plantations, to some photo op viewpoints, and a sandy beach. Come prepared with your swimsuit under your clothing to take a quick dip at Bochinche Beach, if the weather permits. This pristine beach rarely has other visitors and is a great place to take a break to enjoy the sparkling ocean. Bottled water is supplied along the path and when you return to the park you can refresh with some local fresh fruits. Then you will board the transportation for another stop.
Just a short drive away is Tarcoles River Bridge and its famous residents. Here you can spot a mix of local fauna, namely the giant crocodiles sun themselves under the bridge. You can view them safely from above. Also along the river bank, you might see a number of aquatic birds and animals like howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, Caiman (small crocodiles), Basilisk (lizards), and sloths.
There's a stop to do some souvenir shopping on your way back to Puerto Caldera. On arrival, you can head directly to your ship or do some sightseeing in town. You will have loads of time since this is only a 4 hour excursion!
